is it normal or even legal for an officer to ask you for a cash bond if your pulled over? or do you go to jail then bond out?

  1. Some states allow that, mostly for people who are out of state or live quite a distance away from the court. Its an alternative to going to the station and posting bond.

They want the bond because persons who live that far away are more likely not to go to court and pay the fine.

    Its about revenue.

  2. In my area the police NEVER take money from someone unless they are seizing the money as part of the investigation.  All bails and bonds are done from the jail.  However, other states have different rules.  One of my neighboring states makes all out-of-state violators pay for the citation at the scene before they let them go.

You would have to call your local police/sheriff's department and ask them.  I would assume that since you were not arrested and taken to the jail, but were instead given a receipt and a court date that it is normal there.
