Bondarenkos oust Cirstea/ Brianti in the 1st round – Texas Open 2011
Ukrainian sisters Kateryna Bondarenko /Alona Bondarenko dulled on the hard courts of Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas against Italian Alberta Brianti and Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the main draw of the Texas Open 2011. The
Italian/Romanian pair won the match by surviving a midsummer slump of 6-3, 3-6, 9-11.
Commencing the first set; both the teams had hit a double fault each and neither of the teams had smashed an ace but the Ukrainian sisters had managed to hit 75% of their first serves on target, while their adversaries had only
managed a 56% of shots on target.
The Ukrainian pair had managed to achieve a 67% win in their first serves but unable to win a single point in the second, they lost most of their points and were only able to attain 12 out of 24, making it a 50% win of total service
points in the set, while, the Italian and Romanian duo had also won 50% of their total return points.
The Italian/Romaine team achieved a 73% win in their first serves and an average second serve win that won them a total of 63% of their total service points which was a commendable performance against the Ukrainian brace, who were
not able to respond with their usual display of well placed volleys and were only capable of attaining a 37% win of their total return points in the opening set.
Although, both the teams had saved and won a fifty percent of their break points, Brianti/Cirstea had broken their adversaries twice, gaining the numerical edge that they required and hence, by accomplishing a 57% win of the total
service points won the set.
After taking a beating in the first the Ukrainian sisters pulled up their socks and were capable of outfoxing their opponents by winning 6 more points in their total set score.
Amidst the second set neither of the squads had struck a double fault instead both had perfected their serves and even smashed an ace each.
The Bondarenko sisters finally managed to find their grove and took a notch higher in their performance by achieving 60% of their total service points against the Italian/Romaine, who were only able to respond to a few of their
serves and hence, achieved a mediocre 40% win of their total return points.
This time Ukrainian Bondarenko sisters were able to break their opponent’s serves twice and by accomplishing a 56% win of their total set points hacked the set away from the Italian and Romanian duo.
Since the teams had both won a set each the match was pushed into a super tie breaker, fortunately for Brianti/Cirstea the unforced errors were kept to a minimum and they took the lead by winning two consecutive points on their
serve, eventually winning the set and the match.
