Question:

Bonding With My Horse

I am broding my horse in a very nice stable but its pretty far from my house and I only get to see her once a week so bonding is really really hard. I think she sees me as the person who gives her treats more than her firend. We have bonded way better than when we first started out but I still feel distant. If there are any suggestions please tell me I really want to bond with her quickly.

  1. why don't spend more time with her on that 1 day your there just like sitting with her do your homework there with her (just sit next to her and do ur homework) if you dont have any work to do just sit with her and talk to her

  2. take her out for walks, hand grazing, special grooming, doing basic leading exercises, read to her...the list goes on.

go to www.marvwalker.com for a free text version for the bonder.  you can use this to help you build a great line of communciation between you and your horse.

    enjoy your horse.

  3. id say find a place to board her closer because not only is she not only getting enough exersize(once a week isnt enough-horses should get exersize about 4 or 5 days a week)but u arent around her enough to really bond so ya find a closer place to board if thts an option

    good luck

  4. Grooming her and working her in a round pen (not while on her though) will give you the fastest results.  We had a young mare that was abused, beaten and then abandoned.  She was then brought to the place that I rode at.  She was stalled next to my horse so whenever I was there I would give her a long grooming session and graze her on a lead.  We saw dramatic results with this process.  She began to walk up to us and stay calm at things that she used to spook at.

  5. There's no way to bond with your horse quickly. It's just spending time with them and messing with them. When you are with her, spend a lot of time grooming and just being around her. Most of my bonding time with my horses was just sitting out in the field with them.

  6. You can just spend lots of time grooming her, braiding her mane, talking to her and just sitting in her stall. Also try taking her for walks around the stable or in a quiet grass field and stand there and allow her to eat the grass. I always like doing Join-Up (Monty Roberts Technique montyroberts.com)  with my horses to build a strong relationship based on trust. I agree that it takes some time to really bond with them, but these suggestions can give the a great starting block plus you get to see your horses true personality. I also like to just sit in the field and talk to her if you are able to. Its also a great way to relax!  Taking her for nice quiet trail rides could also make creating a bond easier.

    Hope these suggestions help!
