Bong Guang Yik stuns Chong Kein Hiung to bag Men’s Singles U20 title at Merdeka Cup Challenge 2012
Malaysia’s Bong Guang Yik stole the limelight as he claimed the Men’s Singles U10 title by playing tremendous badminton and beating his team-mate Chong Kei Hiung in the final contest at the Merdeka Cup Challenge 2012 on Sunday, August 26, in Kuala Lumpur.
The lower ranked Bong Guang, who entered into the tournament as an un-seeded shuttler, played with tremendous confidence and stunned his higher ranked opponent Chong Kein who was the top seed in the tournament.
The un-seeded Bong Guang showed his brilliance on court and managed to win the opening game with a narrow score. However, he was in full swing in the second set and punished his rival by ending up the battle in just 35 minutes with a smashing difference
on the board.
In the meanwhile, the top seeded Chong Kein tried his best to get rid of his lower ranked opponent but failed to live up to the expectations and eventually lost the match in straight sets with a humiliating margin.
It was a crunchy contest in the opening set of the contest as both shuttlers put up thrilling show of attacking badminton and remained close on the board at the opening stage.
They were fully focused on court and no one could establish a strong position until the end of opening half.
After the mid-game interval, Bong Guang played superb game at net but his rival was equally good in returning the net shots towards rear-court area.
The score progressed closely until 20-20 when Bong Guang executed a few impressive shots in right areas and remained successful in finishing off the set with a dramatic 22-20 score on the board.
In the following game, it was Bong Guang who stunned everyone by playing flawless badminton and gave a shocking treatment to his higher ranked opponent by setting up an incredible lead until the break.
After the one-minute interval, Bong Guang continued playing smashing game without showing any mercy to his rival and eventually ended up the set with a stunning difference of 21-5.
The impressive Bong Guang won the Men’s Singles U20 title in a staggering fashion with a superb 22-20 and 21-5 score on the board.
