Bongani Khumalo set to join Tottenham in January
Tottenham has entered a pre-contract with centre-back Bongani Khumalo, agreeing to sign the South African during the January transfer window.
Khumalo, who has played for South African team SuperSport United sine 2007, was on trial with Tottenham during September. Manager Harry Redknapp was impressed by the 23-year-old in training.
"He's not expensive. We had him over on trial and we like him. It will be a great chance for the kid. He's a great lad. He comes from a poor background and he's desperate for a chance and we're going to give him a chance."
Youngest captain to lift South African league trophy
The defender was part of the team that won three league titles in the past three seasons at SuperSport. At 22, Khumalo became the youngest ever team captain to lift the domestic league trophy in South Africa.
SuperSport's chairman Khulu Sibiya thanked Khumalo for his contribution after the deal was announced.
"Bongani has been an exceptional player for Supersport United. His three and a half years at the club has seen him develop into one of the best footballers in the country and his contribution was a major factor in the club-winning three consecutive Absa
Premiership League titles."
Khumalo, who said he dreamed of playing in the Premier League and in the Champions League after this year's World Cup, will be able to play in both competitions for his new club.
Tottenham's new signing has made 19 international appearances and scored his first goal for South Africa in the team's 2–1 victory over France at the World Cup.
The arrival of Khumalo will strengthen Tottenham's defensive options as centre-backs Michael Dawson, William Gallas, Younes Kaboul and Ledley King have suffered had injury problems since the start of the season.
