Bonita Bredenhann wins 2012 South African Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship
Bonita Bredenhann won the 2012 South African Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship held at Benoni Country Club.
The win was made sweeter by the fact that Bredenhann lost the event last time against Kim Williams. The score in the 2010 event was 6 to 4 in Williams’ favour. This time, Bredenhann faced Michaela Fletcher with a 3 to 2 score.
Many observers particularly appreciated the performance displayed by Bredenhann. The overall comments were very positive and highly appreciable of the game that she played.
Commenting on her win, Bredenhann was very happy. She said, “It’s awesome. I’ve been waiting so long for my chance and now I’ve done it”.
The win was not that easy. Bredenhann faced tough competition in both, the semis and the final rounds. Even the road to the semi-finals was not that easy.
Bredenhann had to play against the well known Nobuhle Dlamini. The game was tough but Bredenhann managed to win it, despite many commendable efforts from Nobuhle Dlamini.
The semi-final was another tough round with Bredenhann facing Bianca Theron. The game was long and Theron proved to be a difficult opponent. However, in the end it was Bredenhann who triumphed with an 8 to 7 win.
Bredenhann started the tournament on a good note. While struggling a bit in the initial rounds, she recovered and played amazing golf that left a trail of wins all the way to the finish.
Bredenhann is one of the emerging amateurs who are following the current African golf stars. This win highlights the importance of golf in Africa and the players that are emerging on the international scene.
This win reflects the winning attitude of Bredenhann. Although she was very saddened by her loss in the 2010 tournament, she did not lose heart.
She worked really hard and long to prepare for this year’s event. All that work and patience paid off when she became the champion at the Benoni Country Club.
Discussing the issue, she said, “That was a big disappointment for me. But at that stage I just wasn’t strong enough. I’ve been working really hard on my game. I’ve been working with a sports psychologist to help me keep focused, and it all clicked this
week”.
