Bonnie MacDonald seizes Women’s 10km Open Water gold: Day two – Australian Open Water Championships
Bonnie MacDonald of Miami dictated terms to her challengers and seized gold medal of the 10km Open Water event in Women’s 16 Year Olds group on day two of the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships on Saturday, February 18.
The Australian Championship was a three-day event, where the spectators witnessed remarkable struggles of all national athletes in their exclusive events.
The 16-year-old MacDonald went full rampant in the 10km discipline and surpassed all struggles of her competitors. With her notable pace, she remained nearly seven seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Kate Hofmeyer of Burnside and clocked a time of 2
hours, 07 minutes and 44.51 seconds for gold medal.
Hofmeyer remained almost three body lengths slower from the gold medallist and occupied second best spot of the race with a timing of 2 hours, 07 minutes and 57.95 seconds. She was chased by Sofia Jenson of Blacktown City, who stayed just 0.11 seconds slower
from the second position holder and concluded her swim in a time of 2 hours, 07 minutes and 58.06 seconds.
Moments later, Brooke Wilson of City of Perth grabbed gold medal of the equivalent event in Women’s 17-18 Year Olds category. The 18-year-old Wilson outsmarted her competitors for the top fastest spot of the race and made her way to the podium for gold medal
in a time of 2 hours, 09 minutes and 23.25 seconds.
The second fastest spot of the race was secured by Zoe Elkerton of Wests Illawarra, who followed Wilson on the finishing line for silver medal by ending her swim in a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 48.09 seconds. The 18-year-old Elkerton was chased by Samantha
Watts of Blacktown City, who secured the victory stand for bronze medal by submitting a time of 2 hours, 13 minutes and 23.40 seconds.
MacDonald and Wilson were overjoyed with their dazzling efforts in the 10km event and aroused expectations of their respective mentors by stating that they will try to make their country proud at the higher levels of swimming. In addition, the winners were
invited on the medal rostrum for their fascinating efforts after the session.
