Bonsai question ?

I wanted to plant just a little bit of grass in the pot that my bonsai tree is in, I was wondering if that would be okay for the bonsai. Also do you think the grass would grow in the special bonsai soil ?

  1. Most grasses would be a problem. They would suck the water up and use the nutients.

Instead of actual grass use a plant like Irish or Scots Moss. Its not a moss but look kind of like it.

I have some 'mondo grass' in one of my large (20gal) bonsai. Its not "grass" either, but looks like it.  Has nice flowers too.

Maybe some sheep fescue would be fine. It is a fine grass and uses very little water, grows small.

  2. Pots for bonsai are very shallow and relatively small. The root system of the grass would extend to the bottom of the soil and you would risk strangling the roots of your plant. Also, the grass would draw nutrients from the soil.
