I bought a bonsai tree 2 weeks ago and was told by the woman in the shop to water it about once a week, it has been o'k but now some of the leaves have shriveled up and and worried it might be dieing,

It has redish to green leaves that look like cannabis leaves,

am i not watering it enough or is it not getting enough sunlight?

i keep it on a window sill with a window open all day apart from at night.

  1. Hard to tell without a picture, but your description sounds like its a japanese maple - Acer palmatum

    Is this it? -

Zoom in on the picture to see the leaf in detail.

If it is a maple it needs to be outside, never indoors except for short periods of time (1 or 2 days). Small maples with fine textured leaves need to be kept out of direct sun.

The tree needs to be watered when the soil begins to dry out. Not on any daily schedule or anything, as temperature, wind, shade etc. will all have an effect on the trees drying time.

If the leaves are shriveling and have tan edges, then it is getting too much sun. The leaves are sunburnt. If the leaves are just shriveling and getting soft, then you are not watering enough.

As long as the tree is otherwise healthy, the burnt or dried out leaves will probably fall off and you'll see buds start forming to make new leaves.
