Boo Weekley ends five-year PGA Tour title drought at Crowne Plaza Invitational – Golf news
Boo Weekley added another PGA Tour title to his tally, after he recorded a one-stroke victory at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, on Sunday, May 26, 2013.
The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial was being staged at the Colonial Country Club, featuring a strong line-up, vying for a share of US$ 6.4 million prize fund.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Weekley remained consistent in his game. Despite making some mistakes in each of the four rounds, he posted decent scores to remain in contention for the top spot.
He started his campaign in Texas by posting scores of 67 in each of the first two rounds. He then added a 66 to his scorecard on day three, to finish one stroke off the pace set by Matt Kuchar.
The final round witnessed Kuchar recording just three birdie putts against a lone bogey, to card a two-under par score.
Weekley, in the meantime, took advantage of the situation and surged to the top of the leaderboard, courtesy of his six birdies against two bogeys, which allowed him to post a 14-under par tournament score, one-shot better than Kuchar.
“I'm excited, that's my main thought. It's unreal. Ever since I've been coming here and looking at that wall, and you see all of them names on the wall, and finally I get to have my name up there. It don't get no better than that,” he said.
Talking to the PGA Tour’s official website, he also said that he did not check the leaderboard until he finished his 12th hole.
“That's when I realized, wow, here I go, I need to do something,” he added. “Either hold on to it or try to make a couple of more birdies just to kind of lock it up. I kind of gave myself the opportunity. I hit one good putt and one bad putt, but overall
it turned out.”
The defending champion Zach Johnson, in the meantime, carded a 12-under par tournament score, to finish third on the leaderboard, his first top-10 finish of the season.
