  1. It would be A4 by default. But you can change it. The writing would be size 12 by default, but again you can change it, although I always write in size 12.

Write in whatever you want - alterations can always be made later

  2. Formatting a book in Microsoft Word is incredibly difficult (I've tried!) it is better to use desktop publishing software such as Adobe InDesign, or QuarkXpress. Scribus is an open source desktop publishing application, but I can't personally attest to its usability because I nave never used it. But it would probably be something useful to look at: http://www.scribus.net/

A 10 point font is usually used in publishing. (Though this can depend a great deal on the typeface itself.)

  3. Here's the thing. In the publishing industry, things arent counted in pages. They are counted in words. You give yourself away if you say that you have so-and-so pages. It's more simple to use words, anyway. You can fudge length.

  4. Get the Writers & Artists Yearbook 2009 or borrow it from your library. This will answer your question and many others about writing and getting published.

  5. This is the publisher's POV. I disagree on Word being difficult. You simply open a new document, go to your FILES tab, then click on PAGE SETUP and everything is right there for you. Make sure you set for WHOLE DOCUMENT.

The size of your paper depends on where you will submit it. Foreign, A4 is okay but if you submit in America, you will need it to be 8.5 x 11.

Your font should be Times New Roman 12 point.

    Lines double-spaced

Page count and word count go hand in hand. Generally speaking you figure 250 words per double-spaced page. This is a generalization based on 25 lines with 10 words per line.

  6. You don't need to do the layout, the editors will do that for you. Just write away, the layout is the least of your concerns.
