Question:

Book Recommendations......?

Well, I've been fairly bored lately and figured that finding a new book to read would help solve my problem. The following are examples of the types of books I like:

1. Historical fiction

- My Brother Sam is Dead - James Lincoln

- Johnny Tremain - Esther Hoskins

- An Acquaintance With Darkness - Ann Rinaldi

2. Books that make you think

- Star Rover - Jack London

- The Demon Haunted World - Carl Sagan

- The Davinci Code - Dan Brown (who doesn't love this book)

- The Giver - Lois Lowry

3. Books that create that type of mood and atmosphere I can't explain

- Never Cry Wolf - Farley Mowatt (my all-time favorite book)

- The Sea Wolf - Jack London

The above books are all ones that I have greatly enjoyed over most others. Do you have any ideas on similar books, or ones that I might like?

Also, please don't mention Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, I'm currently in the process of reading them. = )

Theres also a book that I accidently stumbled upon called A Hard Boiled Wonderland and The End of The World, the book looks very phillosophical and I'm thinking about picking it up. Do you have any opinions on it?

Thanks for taking the time to read my question, all answers are greatly appreciated.

  1. Across Five Aprils is pretty good in the History category I guess, I didn't really like it, but I didn't really like Johnny Tremain either lolz.

  2. I recently read Inverted World by Christopher Priest. It's Science Fiction and excellently written. Will definitely make you think!

  3. 1.

other books by Rinaldi (try Girl in Blue)

Fever 1793 by Anderson (the name kind of explains it, good book)

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Selznick (younger age group but great information on the history of motion pictures)

    1&2

Cure by Levitin (dystopian & historical fiction combined)

Seeing Stone by Crossly Holland (Arthurian legend combined with the history of the 4th crusade)

    2

    Rules of Survival by Werlin

Night by Wiesel (true account of the Holocaust)

5 People You Meet in Heaven by Albom

Host by Meyer (this one surprised me because I don't like Twilight)

Last Book in the Universe by Philbrick

Hole in the Sky by Hautman (honestly weird by thought provoking)

House of the Scorpion by Farmer

    The Screwtape Letters by Lewis

    Peeps by Westerfeld

    3.

I've never read Farley Mowat but his works remind me a bit of Jean Craighead George.  They are more of a younger age group but both Julie of the Wolves and Trancula in My Purse are good.

  4. ?

  5. If your looking for a book that makes you think and has a slight mix of history to it, you might go for Dan Brown's Angels and Demons. That is, if you haven't already read it.

  6. i just finished The Thirteenth Tale by diane setterfield.  very well thought-out mystery.

  7. "Till We Have Faces" by C.S. Lewis. It is a reworking of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, and it WILL make you think.

  8. What about The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. d**k? It's an alternative history of what may have happened if Germany and Japan had won WWII. I think that may fit your second category. I'm also looking to read another by him called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It's where the movie Blade Runner came from.

I also recommend Frankenstein to everyone.

  9. My humble suggestions after thoroughly analyzing your favorites:

The Swarm. A Novel of the Deep - Frank Schätzing

The Fist of God - Frederick Forsyth

    Fatherland - Robert Harris

All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque

A Room of One's Own - Virginia Woolf

The Exile: s*x, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia - Mark Ames, Matt Taibbi

    Rollerderby - Lisa Carver

    China Boy - Gus Lee

Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman - Marjorie Shostak
