Book european hostels before we leave or wait till we get there?

We are going to be travelling through France, Switzerland, and Italy in August/September, should we book our hostels in Do you get better rates online vs. in person?

  1. Hostel rates are usually the same online or in person. As you're travelling through a few countries, I would usually recommend that you don't book them in advance because your plans might change during your trip and you might end up forfeiting your payment. BUT, August is peak travel season, so you should book your hostels first as they might be fully booked. You don't wanna be stranded in an unfamiliar city at night.


  2. Rates are generally the same.  It is advance booking that usually reduces the price, although not by much now between now and August.  Plus as August is peak season then the prices will remain on the high side no matter when you book them

    Also because it is the peak season, I would really advice you to book in advance.  Yes you lose flexibility, but at least you are sure you have a bed.  Firstly it is busy anyway, and secondly, all you need is a concert, or festival in one of the places you are going to, and it could be difficult (or expensive) to find any bed, let alone a hostel
