  1. If you're hungry, you can always eat the Pi!

Sorry.  I couldn't resist the pun.

    But seriously...

Martel's soul, so to speak, was hungry, even if his physical body was satisfied.  He needed something that would satisfy his spiritual and emotional well being.  There's nothing like a survival story that can do that.  And not just a story of physical survival either.  When Pi was on the life raft, of course his body went through h**l.  But his emotional and spiritual well being did too.  If you look at the second story he told the Japanese investigators, the story without animals, you'll see that his mind was protecting itself from the truth of that pain, allowing him to survive.

What this story "fed" to the author was that sometimes the truth doesn't matter, but what matters is what helps us to live, and thrive, and be happy.  You can't prove Richard Parker was on that life boat any more than you can prove the existence of God, but when you finish the story, don't you want to believe in both of them?  Because living in a world where they exist is much nicer than living in a world of hard facts.
