Do i need to ask for the author's permission or the publisher's authorization to publish a book review for a school magazine? For example, I'm writing for a school magazine and I would like to make a book review on, say "Harry Potter," do I need to ask J.K. Rowling or the HP's publisher if I could publish my review on a school magazine, or is it completely unnecessary?

  1. i wouldnt think so... unless your giving it a terrible rating and reccommending anyone not to read it.. besides your magazine isn't really goin to be published is it?? well thats what i think.. but what would i know?

  2. You would need to ask the for the publisher's authorization. i don't think you'd be able to get her direct line anyways, hehe.

  3. No you don't need any permission as long as your not giving away any intellectual property i.e the ending, the plot, or quotes from the book.

A review is an opinion of a product. As long as you only give your opinion you'll be fine. Example "I like J.K new book the story is well written, no wasted words, story keeps you page turning, however I was unhappy with the length." etc.

  4. completely unnecessary. ive done many book reviews for my school newsletter and ive never had any problems. its your opinion as well, so you're allowed too. just dont give away the ending!
