Bookies still approach the players, says Tim May – Cricket News Update
Former Australian off-spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Timothy-Brian-Alexander-May-c93981, believes that the curse of match-fixing is still present in international cricket and revealed that he has evidence of bookies approaching some players.
May happens to be the Chief Executive (CEO) of the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA), and has been very active in the recent times in order to protect the interests of the players all around the world.
Since the last couple of decades, there have been a lot of allegations of corruption in the game. Cricket was once known as the ‘gentlemen’s game’ but the cancer of match-fixing or spot-fixing has severely damaged the reputation of the sport.
A number of cricketers have been banned from playing competitive sport in last 15 decades, including former captains like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Salman-Butt-c2418. Many other cricketers from all across the globe have been found involved
in this evil.
May, who played for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 during 1980s and 1990s, while talking to Pakpassion, expressed that he wishes to see the game corruption-free but admitted that this is not the case at the present moment.
The CEO of FICA believes that questionable actions are witnessed in every other game, which means that something fishy is going on.
“I’d like to think that cricket was clean at the moment, but I think I’d be naive to think that. There’s always chatter amongst players that something’s not looking appropriate or whatever,” May claimed.
As a CEO of players’ representative body, May has no doubts that bookies try to offer handsome money to the players and it is very much a possibility that some of the players might have accepted those offers. However, May thinks that at times, the players
have to cooperate with the bookies unwillingly.
The former off-spinner added, “People are still approaching players, we’re well aware that people are still approaching players to conduct themselves in these activities. I think we’d be naive to think that some player, somewhere hasn’t accepted that, whether
by being forced into that situation by some sort of blackmail, or he has decided that he’ll take that risk.”
