What does it mean when it says 1 stop or 2 stop, when you try and book a flight. I clearly understan non-stop flight but not the others. Will you have to switch planes or will you reamin in that plane when you stop? Can someone please clarify this for me, thanks in advance.

  1. Some planes you may have to switch, and others you stay on. If it shows a different gate then you will have to switch. I am not totally sure if you can determine that BEFORE you buy the tickets, i would call your airliner and ask. ITs always best to ask before you buy:)

  2. 'Charlie' pretty much said it all and said it well.

You can distinguish a connecting flight easily... you'll have two (or more) flight numbers. Means, of course, that you have to actually change planes en route.

With one, two or more stops (also known as a 'milk run'), you stay on the same plane but it stops along the way to deplane and board additional passengers. Generally the airlines try to do this as quickly as possible so you are not encouraged to leave the plane.

  3. There are three different designations for flights on an itinerary:  non-stop, direct, and connecting.  A non-stop flight is self-explanatory - a flight from origin to destination which makes no stops. A direct flight may make an interim stop or stops but is usually designated with the same flight number. You may be on the same aircraft for the entire trip or you may have to change planes depending on the airline and route. In the US, for example, Soutwest Airlines operates many direct flights in it's system usually requiring no plane change .  A connecting flight is one where a plane change is necessary and is designated by different flight numbers.  Connections may be on the same or different airline depending on the itinerary so you must pay attention to the itinerary nformation to ensure you connect to the correct airline and flight.
