  1. Here is a list of reading suggestions: http://extranet.sfs.or.kr/~lindarogde/11...

    And another: http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/whhs/dep...

And one more: http://controversialbooks.com/bb/bb_blis...  Note that this last list is books that have been censored, banned, or challanged.

  2. harry potter

  3. Fahrenheit 451- by ray bradbury- futuristic dystopia where humans are not allowed to read. A "fireman," men that burn the books, discovers the evils around him by smuggling the books he is meant to destroy. Wonderful message, cool concept, edgy enough for an 11th grader.

The Great Gatsby- by F. Scott Fitzgerald- a classic novel that tells of the wild party lifestyle of the young and rich during Prohibition and its effect on them.

Lord of the Flies- by William Golding- I loved this book when I read it in 10th grade. FULL of symbolism. Boys are shipwrecked and survival of the fittest ensues. Those who have a conscience are separated from those who would rather live primitively.

The Old Man and the Sea- by Ernest Hemingway- a short novel that introduces the style of Hemingway, a contrast in "flowery" writing. Hemingway was a journalist and used the "iceberg theory," or exposing a little to hint at more beneath the surface

Hamlet- by William Shakespeare- this is a fascinating play about obsession and vengeance. I am of the opinion that a play should always be included in an English curriculum each year. This one particularly challenges the student to read closely. I also recommend a Shakespeare help book for the student.

The Screwtape Letters- by C.S. Lewis- the letters between a demon and the devil about how to tempt a man away from God

Lastly, short Stories are a good thing to work on between books as well. My favorites include "Roman Fever" by Edith Wharton, "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, and "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allen Poe

  4. The Alchemest. Little Women. Pride and Prejiduce.

  5. Go to http://www.Sonlight.com and request their free catalog

they have a great book list with descriptions of each book. They have a nice broad selection. And most of them are available at the library.

    Best of Luck!
