Looking for books that a child with A.D.D will take an interest in.

The child I am speaking of is 9 yrs old and she has A.D.D.She needs to brush up on her reading but just does not take great interest in it.Any books that could be recommended would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you.

  1. You should get one of those feeling book. Not like the blind ones but the ones where you can feel something sticky or fluffy or soft!

  2. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.  Or any Maurice Sendak book... they are very dramatic with wild pictures.  A child with ADD tends to read a bit beneath their supposed skill level.  But that doesn't matter, what matters is that they are reading and getting interested.  Then they will graduate to higher levels.  This is a picture book about a little boy who gets into trouble, is sent to his room, and imagines all sorts of wild activity in his own little dream world.  But when he wakes up, he finds his supper on the table next to him, and "it is still hot."  Sendak is an award-winning author.

If that is too young for her, then I would suggest any of the books written by Louis Sachar, especially "Wayside Stories from Wayside School."  My sons read those constantly, and sometimes we all read them together.  They are hysterically funny, and very fast reading.  There is an entire series of Wayside School books, to move onto.  Sachar is a reknown and celebrated children's author.

Reading together is an excellent way to promote reading skills.  Sometimes, it's just the getting started that is the problem.  Start by saying, "Let's read this together."  Read with expression and enjoy the experience.  If you have to read the whole book to her, go ahead.  She will go back and read it again for herself, especially if you choose something so fun to read.

  3. Lift the flap books or changing picture books are always good.  Also maybe one of those books that they have to find stuff in the pictures like Animalia, Wheres Wally or Spot What?.  My child has autism and loves them.
