Something along the lines of Marley and Me or The Art of Racing in the Rain. Fiction or otherwise.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

  1. If you are ready for a more terrifying experience try most of Dean R. Koontz's books. "Watchers" is one of the best. He really loves retrievers, even his early book photos have him posing with one!

  2. Spunky - by Dori Brink. It's an adorable book. It has a heartbreaking beginning with Spunky being tossed out of a car in a burlap bag as a puppy because his owner didn't want him... but it has a great ending. I read it over and over again when I was younger.

  3. I haven't read The Art of Racing in the Rain, but I have read and loved Marley & Me.

    You might enjoy:

-Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover's Story of Joy and Anguish by Mark R. Levin (non-fiction; tearjerker)

-Bob, Son of Battle by Alfred Ollivant (fiction, dog)

-Big Red by Jim Kjelgaard (fiction, dog - he wrote a series of these)

-The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford (2 dogs & 1 cat - great story of devotion, friendship, survival)

-My Dog Skip by Willie Morris (true, tearjerker)

-Chips: A Hometown Hero by Nancy M. West (true, amazing story plus some tears)

-Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dicamillo (fiction, heartwarming)

-Old Yeller by Fred Gipson (dog, tearjerker)

-James Herriot's books detailing his experiences as a veterinarian in Yorkshire: All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All - and other books he wrote like Dog Stories. (non-fiction, some of the stories are hysterically funny, some will wring your heart)

-Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (fiction, horse)

-National Velvet by Enid Bagnold (fiction, horse)

-The Black Stallion by William Farley (another horse story)

-My Friend, Flicka by Mary O'Hara (yet another horse)

-The Call of the Wild by Jack London (fiction, classic, rather brutal but good)

-White Fang by Jack London (another fiction classic)

-Animal Miracles: Inspirational and Heroic True Stories by Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger (non-fiction, very good)

-The White Stallions of Vienna by Alois Podhajsky (true story of the Lipizzaners - the dancing horses which are born black and turn white...and what happened to them and this famous riding school after World War II)

I know there are many more, but hopefully this will help.
