Books on theoretical physics?

What are a couple good books on theoretical physics that are written for the general reader?

[string theory, quantum mechanics, particle physics, etc.]

Nothing too complicated. I find the subjects fascinating, but I have yet to take even an official physics class. I understand some general things about physics, but nothing too deep
