Question:

Bookstore in Paris?

I'm looking for the name of a bookstore I once visited in Paris. It's close to Notre Dame, but not Shakespeare & Co. There is another one, I think right next door. It's been a while, so I may be confused. Any help?

  1. You didn't say you mean an English language bookstore.

I would guess you are thinking of Joseph Gibert. It's on St Michel, just along from Notre Dame.

  2. There is no bookstore next door to Shakespeare & Co. I would advise you to check the French yellow pages:

    http://www.pagesjaunes.fr

Next to Qui? Quoi? Type "librairie"

Next to Où? Type zip code 75005

Then look on the maps to see if you recognize the location or maybe one of the names will ring a bell. Zip code 75005 is for the 5th arrondissement, on the left bank. Next to it you may also try 75006. Notre Dame is in the 4th arrondissement (75004 which includes the island and part of the right bank near it).

Is it a normal French bookstore or is it specialized in English language books? Because there is another famous English bookstore on the right bank, past the Louvre on Avenue de Rivoli called WH Smith: http://www.whsmith.fr/indexE.htm but it is not near Notre Dame at all.

  3. Hi there Asme,

I wrote about bookstores in Paris on my website recently, and I have a list - maybe one of these names will jog your memory:

    Abbey Bookshop - 75005 - close to Shakespeare's

Tea and Tattered Pages - 75006

    Village Voice Bookshop

    W.H. Smith - 75001

You can get the full addresses etc on my webpage if you like:

    Hope this helps!
