Boomers and Opals qualify for the Olympics - Basketball
Both the men’s as well as the women’s Australian basketball teams have recently managed to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The qualification was achieved after both the Boomer’s and the Opals defeated teams from New Zealand in matches that took place in Brisbane, New Zealand. Both matches were part of the best of three Oceania championships.
Despite the fact that a third game is left to be played on Sunday, both teams have already been able to assure a spot in the prestigious international sporting event next year.
It was a tougher job for the Boomers to qualify than it was for the Opals. The victory came to the Opals at a snug margin of 19 points. The team that the Opals defeated in order to make this accomplishment was the Tall Ferns. On the other hand, the Boomers
sealed the deal on a 17-point margin that had to be accomplished after an extra final quarter of play.
The Opals have already made their mark in the Olympic Games before as they have had the honour of bagging three silver medals at the games previously. These medals have come their way in the last three consecutive Olympic Games. However, the Boomers have
not been so fortunate and have yet to make their mark in the Olympic Games.
The coach of the Boomers, Brett Brown, has not made any claims about his team winning any medals but he seems confident that his squad can pull off a spectacular show at the London 2012 Olympics and make everyone proud.
The Olympic Games will be coming to London for the third time in the history of the city. The first time that the Games embraced the city of London was in the early part of this century and dates back to the year 1908. A considerable number of years passed
by before the Olympic Games turned towards London once again in 1948. By hosting the Olympics once again next year, London will become the only city in the world that would have hosted the Olympic Games three times.
