Boonchu Ruangkit finishes tied for the 39th position at the Thailand Golf Championship
Boonchu Ruangkit of Thailand carded a one-over par 73, in the final round of the Thailand Golf Championship, to finish tied for the 39th position on the leaderboard, on Sunday, December 9, 2012.
The tournament was being staged at the prestigious Amata Spring Country Club, which is known for its difficult layout.
The Thailand Golf Championship, also regarded as one of the premier tournaments on the Asian Tour, featured a number of top-notch players from different parts of the world.
This year, the event reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the Ryder Cup hero Sergio Garcia, the Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Thaworn Wiratchant, the Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa and the defending champion Lee Westwood.
Ruangkit, 56, was the oldest player to participate in the second edition of the tournament in Bangkok.
The veteran Thai marked a slow start to his campaign in Thailand, having carded a 73 in the opening round on Thursday.
He then posted decent scores of 71 and 70, in the second and the third round to enter the final round in two-under.
The last round also witnessed him go over par, as he mixed two bogeys and a double bogey with three birdies.
At the end of the week, he found himself settled 24 strokes behind the winner Charl Schwartzel, who carded a massive 25-under par tournament score.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, the five-time Asian Tour winner said that the venue course favoured the long hitters.
Therefore, he was having difficulty to create birdie chances. As a result, he finished way down the leaderboard.
Despite recording a poor finish, he was pleased with his overall performance in the tournament, considering the fact that he was among the short-hitters, who participated in the event.
“This course is good for the long hitters. It is too long for me so overall I’m happy to finish under-par,” he said. “Now I aim to finish inside the top-40 of the Order of Merit. I’ll be the oldest player there. I hurt my leg because I’ve been walking too
much so hopefully I can hold on for another week”.
