Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana overwhelmed Daniel Paiola of Brazil in the Men’s Singles second round of the US Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, in Orange, California, on Tuesday, July 12.
The fourth seed, Thai shuttler spent just 25 minutes in the court and sent Paiola packing in a straight-set fight. World Number Ten, Ponsana, powered his way into the next round as he showed on mercy to the Brazilian, who was not playing well against his
experienced opponent. The Thai finished-off the battle in striking fashion, with a wonderful margin against Paiola.
In the starting set of the match, the speed of the game was quite high as both shuttlers were playing aggressive badminton. Ponsana is considered to be one of those shuttlers who play with precision, as he never panics whatever the situation is during the
match.
Until the interval in the opening game, Ponsana was leading with a comfortable margin of 11-7. He was playing smooth badminton, as he found no problem in reaching everywhere in the court and was also picking the shuttlecock very early.
Ponsana’s sharp reflexes and superb anticipation put hum far ahead of Paiola, who was finding it hard to maintain the speed of the rallies. The Thai won the set by taking 13 minutes, with a good margin of 21-15.
In the second set, Ponsana maintained a high pace right from the start to put pressure on his challenger. He was playing with deception to make Paiola work hard in returning his well placed strokes in all areas of the court. Paiola was trailing behind the
higher ranked rival in the opening half, with a margin of 7-11.
After the break, Ponsana maintained his grip on the pace of the game and spared no chance for Paiola to catch up the difference. The Thai easily won the second game by a 21-14 margin, by taking just 12 minutes. This 25-minute battle ended in two games, where
the Thai emerged as the winner by a 21-15 and 21-14 margin.
