Boonsak Ponsana secures pre quarter-final berth in Men’s Singles event – Japan Open Update
Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana played flawless badminton and escorted his country to the pre quarter-final round of the Yonex Japan Open on September 19, 2012.
World Number 25 shuttler outshined Sony Dwi Kuncoro after an exhausting exercise of 66 minutes. He earned the right to be in next round by registering 14-21, 21-17 and 21-18 margin.
The Thai campaigner came back from a horrendous start and saved some honour by prevailing in the last two games.
Now he will test his badminton skills against the local shuttler Sho Sasaki and a win will take him into the round of eight.
Boonsak is expected to have a smooth ride to the quarter-finals as he has raised his chances by performing exceptionally well in the opening match.
He took some time to get settled and allowed the opposing shuttler to pocket a vital match point on merit.
The Indonesian player launched a brisk attack and established his grip over the game with a decent total of 11-6.
After the mid-game break, Kuncoro prevailed in seven consecutive rallies and raised his lead to 18-9. He capitalised this advantage and finished the first set with a favourable score position of 21-14.
However, the story was entirely different in the following game as Boonsak showed a transformed character and brought the contest to the right balance.
Though, the Men's Singles expert remained at the lower end in most part of the game but he proved himself a late bloomer and ruled the court in final moments.
The Thai player played with a cautious approach in the first half of the set and allowed his competitor to put a respectable total of 11-6.
Later part of the game saw him making swift progress with a couple of uninterrupted points and this campaign helped him to level the score at 13-13.
Boonsak gathered valuable points at a steady pace and smacked his opponent with a staggering knock of 21-17.
There was a lot of drama in the decider as both contenders kept chasing each other all the way to game point situation.
Neither of them could enjoy a permanent lead and this cliff-hanging tussle ended when Boonsak placed a winning margin of 21-18.
