Boonsak Ponsana stamps his mark over Wang Zhengming to wrap up Men’s Singles title at Singapore Open
Thailand’s veteran shuttler Boonsak Ponsana proved that he is back on track as he stamped his mark over Wang Zhengming in Men’s Singles final battle and wrapped up the title at the 2012 Singapore Open Super Series in Singapore, on Sunday, June 24.
The World Number 32 Ponsana, who has been struggling hard to get rid of injuries for the last one year and went down in world ranking from the top-10 positions, powered his way back and outplayed Zhengming, who is currently placed at number 18 in the world.
In the absence of many top players like China’s Lin Dan, Chen Long and Chen Jin, Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei and Denmark’s Peter Hoeg Gade, the Thai shuttler found an opportunity to win his second title in Singapore Open as he claimed his first in 2007.
Zhengming, for his part, gave a wonderful fight but not enough to break the flow of his experienced and confident Thai opponent and bowed down to his in straight sets of 54 minutes with a decent score.
In the first game, both men played safe badminton as they were composed in the court, pushing each other in all corners, and reached at 5-5. At this stage, Zhengming became aggressive as he unleashed his impressive smashes and took a 10-5 lead on the board.
Ponsana also played well and narrowed the gap by reaching at 8-11 until the one-minute mid-game interval.
After the break, the Thai shuttler made his fans happy by playing aggressive badminton and levelled the score at 11-11.
Ponsana continued his positive and planned game without showing any sign of confusion. He worked really well at net and did not let his Chinese rival to execute his powerful smashes.
The planned play of Ponsana helped him to maintain an upper hand over Zhengming all the way in the second half of opening game and he eventually took it with a 21-18 margin on the board.
In the second game, the higher ranked Zhengming again played wonderful badminton in the opening half but failed to maintain his focus in the ending points of the game.
Ponsana, on the other hand, was fully focused in the game and won the set with a tight 21-19 score on the board.
The Thai shuttler won this Men’s Singles final against Zhengming in two games with a reasonable margin of 21-18 and 21-19.
