Boonsak Ponsana struggles in the Men’s Singles first round of German Open GP Gold – Badminton news
Thailand’s best player Boonsak Ponsana struggled really hard to pass the Men’s Singles first round test against Italy’s Wisnu Haryo Putro at the German Open GP Gold 2012 in Mulheim, Germany, on Tuesday, February 28.
The World Number 20 Ponsana, who is seeded at number 12 in Men’s Singles draw of the event, faced a tough resistance from his lower ranked opponent and managed to win the match in three games.
On the other hand, Putro, who participated in the tournament as a qualifier, played superb badminton for 43 minutes and stretched his higher ranked opponent to three sets.
Ponsana started his campaign in the first round in an authoritative manner as he played with variations and did not let his lower ranked Italian challenger to adjust in the court.
Until the break in the first game, the higher ranked Thai shuttler established a wonderful lead.
After the break, Putro tried to play fast badminton but could not take any benefit as his opponent was in complete control of the game.
Ponsana was as calm as ever in the opening game and won it with a remarkable 21-11 score on the board.
In the second game, Ponsana lost his focus from the opening points while his rival was on driving seat this time. Putro executed aggressive strokes and managed to set up a wonderful lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Ponsana tried to control the pace of rallies but failed as his lower ranked challenger was everywhere in the court.
The Thai remained struggling throughout the second game and lost it with a stunning difference of 9-21.
In the deciding set, Ponsana geared up his speed and remained dominant this time. He played to his maximum potential by taking the bird early at net and pushed his opponent on back foot.
The Italian could not continue his elevated play in the deciding game and remained behind his rival until the break.
After the one-minute interval, Ponsana continued his attacking play without losing his focus and bagged the set with a one-sided 21-13 score on the board.
Ponsana emerged as the winner of this thrilling rubber-set fight with a 21-11, 9-21 and 21-13 score on the board.
