Boost leak and blue smoke?

i have a 88 daytona shelby Z and it is boosting -15 while idling and when i give it gas it goes up to 0. it is also blowing gray smoke and sometimes blue. what is the problem? ?

  1. There's a good chance your turbo is DOA, the seals give out and leak oil (blue smoke) and possibly coolant (white/greyish smoke). If this happened suddenly the turbo is your most likely culprit, if you have seen poofs of blue in the past it could mean the engine is tired. You could also have a bad head gasket. I would first tear the piping off the cold side of the turbo, reach inside the inlet and see if the compressor wheel is loose or stuck or covered in oil. If it spins freely is clean and solid feeling, you can rule the turbo out and move on to the engine.


  2. If it still shows a positive number while accelerating hard the oil seals on the turbocharger shaft are worn out and leaking oil into the intake and exhaust.  If it never shows positive boost the turbocharger is locked up or the wastegate is stuck open.  Either way the turbo will have to be removed from the engine and repaired or replaced.

  3. for one thing the gray smoke means that the engine is getting too much fuel, the blue means that oil is getting into the engine. as for the boost problem i do not have the answer.
