Booze-lover John Daly hits the highest score for a single hole at John Deere Classic
John Daly, the big-hitting-booze-loving American golfer, finally managed to come out of obscurity to post a new record on the PGA Tour history - the worst score ever carded for a single hole. After landing in a thick native grass on the right of the fairway
on the John Deere Classic, Daly opted to retrieve the ball with as many as three different clubs and using brute force.
"It's just brutal over there," said Daly, who finished with an 81 that left him 11 over. "I mean, I hit it in the worst spot on the golf course. You just can't hit it there."
Daly made a laughing stock of himself at the TPC Deere Run on Friday when his consecutive shots failed to help him get the ball out of the thick grass. Instead of calling for an “Unplayable Lie” as is what normally is done with such a lie, Daly went over
to pull the ball out of the heavy grass where probably no one has ever landed his ball. He had already made the turn after playing the back nine first and was on his way to make the cut for the first time his seven appearances for the season.
Daly hit several shots to finally pull the ball out of the grass but found a greenside bunker. He again wasted two shots to finally finish off the hole. Daly told the PGA Tour Scorekeeper to put him for an 18. The figure was mind blowing when it appeared
on the leaderboard. Daly, however, later had a chance to revise the number of shots he made and the figure was removed with 10-over for his second round.
TPC Deere Run came out to be the course with the lowest score ever hit on the tour when Paul Goydos stunned the field with a 59 in his first round last year. This year, for those who rendered the course fairly easy to play, Daly has proven them wrong.
The Burly golfer, who has also won two major events in his career, the Open Championship in 1995 and the PGA Championship in 1991, lost his tour card way back after his sloppy performance in the events. He has been able to clinch a place in almost every
event on the tour primarily owing to the sponsor’s exemptions.
Daly has been notoriously famous for his immoral activities off and on the course. He married and divorced several wives and faced several lawsuits in this regard. He regularly indulged in gambling, drugs and has remained a chronic alcoholic for several
years.
Meanwhile, Chez Reavie came out to lead the tournament at the halfway mark with his unblemished nine-under, 62 on the second day. Steve Stricker, who is pitched to defend the title for the third time, was also seen gradually making his move up the leaderboard
with a fine seven-under, 64 on the second day. He is now tied for the second spot alongside Steve Marino, trailing Reavie by two shots.
