I'm actually not hired yet, I've passed everything and waiting for an offer. When I put in my app. I put that I would like to go to the Arizona border. I have a friend that lives in Miami and would like to work there. Is it possible to change at all or do I have to serve my time in the southwest first? Also, would you have any idea how hard it would be to find an open spot in Miami or on the keys? thx.

  1. You are allowed to select a 1st, 2nd and 3rd preference for regions you would like to work in.  Human resources will try to offer you one of your preferences but there are no guarantees.

If you are offered your 1st preference and turn it down, you have to reapply.  If you are offered your 2nd or 3rd preference and turn it down, then you need not apply unless you are given another offer and turn that down too.

Some people turn down their 1st preference (or even 2nd or 3rd) because of the specific duty assignment.  As stated above, the preferences are regional.  However, the job offer is to a specific duty station within that region.  For example, a candidate applying with a 1st preference of California is offered Calexico but grew up in, and hoped to work in, downtown San Diego.  He or she may turn down Calexico, but because it was in the region of their 1st preference, that candidate now has to reapply.

Currently, there are no intern positions to Miami Sector.  In order to be posted to the Miami Sector, an intern must first work at a duty station along the southwest border.  After completing the probationary period, the intern may then apply for the Voluntary Relocation Program to a Miami Sector duty station.  Once a vacancy opens at one of the Miami Sector stations, a list is compiled of agents that desire posting to the specific stations and then offers are sent to the selected agents.  Accepting the offer means a transfer to that station.  In short, no, your friend my not join and go straight to Miami.  He/She will have to do his/her time along the southwest border.

  2. You don't have a choice of  where you're assigned,

    you do where you're needed.
