Border Under-19s v Western Province Under-19s - CSA Under-19 Competition - Day 1 – Live Score and Update
Western Province Under-19s 192/8 (62.2 ov) - Western Province Under-19s won the toss and elected to bat
With the young talent from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 testing their mettle in the ongoing CSA Under-19 Competition, the first day of the three-day match between Border Under-19s and Western Province Under-19s saw the latter score 192 runs for the loss of eight wickets after they chose to bat first on winning the toss, at Schoemans Field, East London.
Had Border won the toss, it is most likely that they would have chosen to field first, as their bowling is their strength.
They gave a glimpse of their dangerous bowling when they made inroads with just 26 runs on the board as Western Province opener, S Pono, lost his wicket on a run out. The batsman perished after scoring only ten runs.
However, before Border bowlers could cause further damage they were subdued by K Smith and D Bedingham, who in the second-wicket partnership steered their team towards 108 runs.
The partnership ended on the dismissal of D Bedingham, who clobbered 63 runs off 59 deliveries before he was caught by Ferreira off Christoffels.
With him out of their way, Border bowlers initiated another lethal bowling onslaught, where they prevented the batsmen from playing freely.
Finally, with 148 runs on the scoreboard, the Borders made their third breakthrough when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/J-Smith-c65008 lost his wicket to Modiba after scoring only 17 runs off 37 deliveries.
K http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 was unlucky as he fell just five runs short from scoring his half-century as he was dismissed by Modiba at a time when Western Province had posted 156 runs.
The loss of four batsmen exerted tremendous pressure on the batting side, which affected their scoring rate as the batsmen felt paralysed against the raging bowling attack.
The fifth wicket fell when wicketkeeper/batsman, CWJ Fortune, lost his stumps to Marais after belting only 11 runs off 26 deliveries. At the time of this wicket, Western Province had managed to muster 178 runs.
The side then lost three more wickets before the day finally came to an end.
