  1. They're basically the same, to be honest.  Just different colors.  They're both relatively high-energy, both herders, about the same size, etc.

  2. They are better at different things. I have always had rough collies, I find them completely devoted and loyal companions. Instinctually they are 'shepherds' - and thus reasonably mellow and observant.

Border collies are instinctually 'herders' - they are hardwired to work stock and unless you have livestock or a phenomonally active lifestyle I think most border collies are unsuited to being 'just' pets - they get bored and it's unfair on them.

  3. "Rough Collie" is what you're thinking of.

Border Collies are in general smarter, more active, and more in need of a "job" to keep them busy than Rough Collies are.  Both though are from the Herding group and therefor need mental stimulation to be happy, or they'll find something to occupy their time.. like remodeling your sofa.

Out of the two IMO Collies make the better family dog, whereas Border Collies in North America are the dominant working dog for farms.

So neither are "better" really, it just depends what job you want them to do.

  4. I have owned one of both. It depends on the owner but I feel that collies make a better all around pet than border collies for the average person. Both require a lot of time though.

-Collies have far less of a drive than border collies. Which means less of an urge to chase and nip heels.

-Collies are high energy but its lightyears away from a border collies. Collies need a good amount of exercise everyday but are content to lounge on the couch in between play sesions.

    - Border collies are content to work all day. If you need a farm dog border collies are great, but they love their people just as much as collies and need to be indoors when you are

-Both dogs shed. Collies shed worse though, even the smooth haired variety. The rough coated collie coat requires regular brushing to stay mat free. Border collies are a little more wash and ware

-Border collies are faster but collies are far from slow.

-Both are whip smart. That does not mean they are always easy to train. Both breeds hate repetition and love to have a job to do. Whether that be herding, agility, carting, rally-o, obediance, or tracking. They require a gentle hand in training

-Generally collies have an even temperment, and get along well with all family members and pets if socialized. Border collies can as well but they can be reserved towards strangers

-Collies are a fair bit larger than border collies. Both breeds come in several coat colors. Collies come in blue merle, sable, white, and tri-color. Border collies come in the common black and white, along with red and white, and blue merle

  5. Border Collies are more hyper, and they are smaller. They are extremely intelligent and must have a "job" or they can become destructive or neurotic. They have a silkier, thinner coat than a Rough,or "Scotch" Collie, and need more exercise. As a family dog,the Rough Collie is more suited to a family with children,as it is calmer and more laid -back than a Border Collie. They are both wonderful breeds, though.

  6. The Border will probably have more energy.  But, both breeds were bred for herding and being out in the fields all day working the herds of sheep or whatever.   They are both a very smart breed, though the Border is probably a bit smarter, some even having the intelligence of a 3 year old child.  You have to be prepared for the Border to want constant stimulation or they get bored and when they get bored, they get into trouble!  Whichever breed you choose, I think you will be pleased with either.  They are great dogs and companions.

  7. Border Collies and Rough Collies are both very similar in the sense that they are both herders, and will need a lot of exercise, and mental/physical stimulation. Take note of that.

Grooming will be different, as Rough Collies have longer, coarser hair than a Border Collie. They'll both need to be groomed regularly, but a Border Collie's hair might be more...managable.

Borders are VERY high energy, and can be destructive. Rough Collies are too, but not quite as much so. Either way, you'll want to take the puppy to training, and not leave either breed alone for too long without something to do, as they can/will become destructive.
