At stumps, on the first day of play between Border and South Western Districts in the ongoing CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition, the former trail by 289 runs with 9 wickets remaining in their first innings, at Fort http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hare-c61468 University, Alice.
South Western Districts, who chose to bat, got off to a spectacular start as openers LL Mnyanda and RD McMillan yielded 43 runs.
Mnyanda, was the first casualty of the day, as he was clean-bowled by Nqolo after hammering 14 runs.
With the opener back in the pavilion, it was time for K Scholtz to come in the middle, but the second-wicket partnership failed to launch as with 44 runs on the board, McMillan was trapped in front of stumps. The batsman perished after smacking a 19-run knock.
In the next over, Scholtz became the third wicket of the day, finding his way back to the pavilion without scoring a run.
South Western Districts lost two more wickets by the time they reached 48 runs, as GN Addicott (4) and AP McLaren (0) failed to prosper against the bowling attack.
By this time, things had gone awry for the batting side, and what looked like a great day for them was now turning into a nightmare.
W Lategan and PA Stuurman then forged a match saving partnership, as the batsmen halted the bowling onslaught and gradually brought the side back in the match.
The two batsmen led their side to 116, before this partnership also met its end on the demise of Lategan, who hit the showers after bolstering an impressive knock of 34 runs.
His departure brought BI Louw in the middle as he forged a commendable partnership alongside Stuurman.
The batting duo took the score to 264, before it was time for Stuurman to walk all the way back to the pavilion, as he was dismissed by Wett after bolstering a fantastic knock of 101 runs.
Later, the side was bowled out after posting a mammoth score of 327 runs with BI Louw jabbing a 101-run knock.
From Border, MJ Nqolo was the number-one bowler for taking three wickets.
Border then closed the day with 38 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket.
