Borderlands 2 PC version will not be a Port – Video Games Update
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed that the PC version of Borderlands 2 will not be held back by the console versions and will be the best looking version of the game.
Recently the majority of PC gamers have been upset because developers mostly use consoles as the lead development platform and just port the console version to PC after the game is done. This means that the game is not fully optimised for PC and doesn’t
utilise the full power of the high end graphics cards that most hardcore gamers own. Instead PC gamers are forced to play the ‘dumbed down’ console port which is missing most of the features and customisation options normally found in a PC title.
Gearbox has stated that it always uses PC as the lead platform and even the console development kits are plugged into the PC, meaning that the game is developed on the PC and then downgraded for the console port.
Pitchford stated, “We develop on the PC, it’s how we make games. Even our development kits for console are plugged into PCs. However, we are developers and we take a lot of things for granted as most of us aren’t worried about dealing with our network configurations
and things like that. So, we’ll do it and not worry about the consoles. But what we learned after shipping Borderlands 1, was customers who play on the PC expect better treatment within the game itself.”
Gearbox believes that there is a lot of potential on the PC gaming side but only if you have a killer product that gamers would be willing to buy instead of pirating it. The developer has been listening to the fans and has listed all the most wanted features
the PC version would include.
Some of the popular ones include Field of Vision (FOV) slider, Gamepad support, Offline LAN support, Native Multiplayer Matchmaking, Higher Resolution support, Friends List, Integrated V-Sync, a PC-specific User Interface and no port forwarding for multiplayer.
Pitchford went on to say that Borderland had a smaller budget since it was a new Intellectual Property (IP) but the game was really successful and has sold over 6 million copies so far which has lead to a larger budget for Borderlands 2. The game comes out
for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September 2012.
