Borderlands 2 a lot like Diablo 3 – Video Games Update
Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox software, has stated in an interview with IGN that gamers will find Borderlands 2 to be a lot like Diablo 3 in many ways.
Borderlands 2 is the sequel to the 2009 Sci-fi Western first person shooter (FPS) with role playing game (RPG) elements. The first game was a commercial success despite being a new Intellectual Property (IP). The reason why gamers liked the shooter so much
was because of the co-op. The game featured local two player co-op with a split-screen on consoles and up to four player online co-op.
Pitchford has stated that this time the team has focused much more on individual classes and that will give gamers the incentive to replay the game with a different class as that will completely change the game-play.
He compared the game to Blizzard’s Diablo 3 and stated, “I’m playing as a Mage but I’m definitely going to also play as a Barbarian so I can chop dudes up with melee weapons instead of casting fireballs. That changes the whole nature of the experience. There’s
a lot of people that play Borderlands like that, as a hobby. Adding characters is more for those kinds of gamers.”
Pitchford also stated that the game’s levels were designed in such a way that they could be played with every character and the gamer will not feel under or over-powered. Gearbox has taken the time to polish and balance the game. “There’s a lot of design
complexity to do that. But we really wanted to try it, we wanted to push ourselves, because if we can figure that out, we think that’s awesome,” said Pitchford.
The first Borderlands had over sixty hours of game-play which would increase even more if gamers got the downloadable content (DLC). It seems that the sequel will feature even more game time as the four character classes will play differently. Gearbox has
also announced that there will be additional character classes coming to the game through DLC.
The Mechromancer Class DLC will be free for those who pre-order the game before it is released on September 18, 2012.
