Borderlands 2 has gone Gold – Video Games Update
Gearbox Software has announced today that development for the sequel to the 2009 role playing first person shooter, Borderlands 2 has been completed and the game has been shipped off to manufacturing.
The game will be coming out on September 18, 2012 which is two months before the release of the highly anticipated shooters Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Gearbox has announced that the team will now begin working on potential downloadable content
(DLC) for the game.
The first DLC set to be released after launch will be the new ‘Mechromancer’ class which will have the special ability to summon a robot NPC to help the player out. Gamers who pre-order the special edition of the game will get the new playable character
as DLC for free. Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford explained in an interview that Borderlands 2 was designed in such a way that the team could add additional playable character classes to the game.
"But the other thing too is that even just thinking about the Mechromancer as we did has been risky, as what we really should do is dedicate all of our attention towards shipping the game. But you know, since Scott was already done he was able to do some
concepts there, and it was smart for us to put the hooks in. Just in the same way we put hooks in to allow DLC to be added on, we now have the ability to add characters," said Pitchford as he explained that the team focusing on the DLC will not affect the
quality of the actual game.
So in all probability gamers should be ready to shell out for additional DLCs for the game throughout the year as the first game has four DLC packs after launch. It is expected that Borderlands 2 might get even more as it boasts double the development budget
available for the first game. Pitchford also mentioned that the team had a lot of ideas for future DLCs as there is a lot of untapped potential in the universe. Gearbox is considering taking the series to space and adding new planets to the sci-fi shooter
set on planet Pandora.
