Boris Becker hates loud grunts during rallies – Tennis News
Former Wimbledon Champion, Michael Detlef Stich, once proclaimed that grunting is “disgusting, ugly and unsexy”. It might be an attractive feature for some people but Germans definitely hates this feature.
Once again, another former German Wimbledon Champion, Boris Becker, has spoke bluntly about the grunting in tennis and said it is “an embarrassment, a joke and I hate it”. He want trainers to let their students know, “It’s not
cool, we don’t like it, stop doing it, it’s not necessary – you’re not going to play better tennis with grunting.”
At the moment, the top two players in the world of women tennis are the ones that are under the cosh. World number one, Victoria Azarenka and the second ranked Russian, Maria Sharapova. Both these players are questioned about their
shrieking and unwanted grunts during the rallies that sometimes dismantle the concentration of their counterparts as well.
However, Becker also mentioned that it is already too late to tell these players that it’s not decent to shriek like that; something should have been done around 20 years back when former world number one and a Hall of Famer, Monica
Seles, was doing it.
According to Becker, It is clear that there is no problem with any male player who has natural grunting issues. However, most female stars are a victim of this embarrassing unwanted characteristic. He didn’t like it but there was
no point talking about this issue with Azarenka or Sharapova because that’s the way they play and they can’t just change it in the midst of their career. They will not be able to change their childhood habit but young players who are new to this profession
should be taught to avoid such acts that also take the flare away from the sport.
He was happy to know that women’s tour is planning to talk about this and take a step towards the negative promotion of grunting. He stated, “I’ve heard that things are changing with the juniors. I think it’s the right thing to
do to teach the 10-year-olds and 12-year-olds: ‘It’s not cool, we don’t like it, stop doing it, it’s not necessary – you’re not going to play better tennis with grunting’. Hopefully, the women’s tour is going to follow that through.”
Some people don’t like it, some do. It’s a dilemma. No one can just put a finger on the correct decision about this matter. It has been happening for quite a long time and will continue regardless of what German’s think.
