Boris Becker’s “Day of Charity” latest in string of charities for the year – Tennis News
An interesting sports charity event that took place recently when former world number one tennis star Boris Becker along with another German sports icon, Franz Beckenbauer spent an entire day in fund raising for the Franz Beckenbauer
charity foundation and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
They began their day by playing a golf tournament at the GC Monrepos, and then thereafter went to the Weissenhof Tennis Club where the Mercedes Cup is held annually, an ATP World Tour 250 event. During the ongoing tournament At
the Weissenhof Tennis Club they took part in panel discussions and signed autographs. Later that evening, they then went to the Charity gala were they were the guests of honour, the pair not only auctioned a Meet and Greet event at the next year’s Wimbledon
Championships but Becker also donated his grand slam ticket to the grass courts for Euros 12,000/-. When all was said and done, both the sports icons had raised Euros 50,000 in charity.
Additionally, during this year, a notable charity event that took place was at the Mutua Madrid Open where they hosted a show called “A Setback in the Sun”. The event was organized by the Felix Mantilla Foundation along with tournament
organizers to help bring awareness and combat skin cancer. The Felix Mantilla Foundation’s founding member is the retired ATP professional Felix Mantilla who suffered from skin cancer but eventually came over it.
“A Setback in the Sun” was an infusion of current ATP super stars and retired players in a unique exhibition, which saw 9000 fans that attended the years first “Tour Sports Show” to see the current world number two Rafael Nadal,
David Ferrer, Juan Carlos Ferrero and many more. The event ended with Carlos Moya and Nadal playing a friendly match which the spectators enjoyed enthusiastically.
Earlier this year Andy Murray (tennis star), a British national and currently at world number four along with the famous footballer David Beckham backed “Malaria no More UK”. Not only are they the founding members of Malaria No
More UK Leadership Council but have also supported the charity’s aims to eradicate malaria from Africa by 2015.
The inaugural event of their charity took place in 2009 with a sporting event in Wembley Stadium, where they played tennis over the world’s largest tennis net which was made out of a mosquito net. In 2010 Murray started a campaign
by staring in an advertisement that brought awareness and funds for the charity. The couple was also accompanied by athlete Denise Lewis along with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Downing Street where they had hung a mosquito net for a photo session
with the fans, which represented the need of the hour and illustrated the British leadership in the fight against malaria. Andy Murray continues his support for “Malaria No More UK” through various social media channels and by campaigning for the cause time
and again.
Tennis is not only known for being one of the world’s most expensive sport with payouts to players mounting to USD 23.4 million but is also known for its famous charitable organizations.
