Boris Diaw agrees to a $9 million - 2 year contract with San Antonio Spurs - NBA Update
Boris Diaw has decided to continue his run with San Antonio Spurs. A source with the knowledge of situation has reported that the 30-year-old French centre has agreed to re-sign with the Spurs for a $9 million deal, spanning over
the next two seasons.
Before coming to the Spurs late last season, Diaw was a member of the Charlotte Bobcats. In 37 games, the centre averaged 7.4 points and 5.3 boards, but such was the plight of the North Carolina franchise, that he decided to part
ways with them and requested a trade.
There were also reports of confrontations between Diaw and the then head coach Paul Silas. Diaw was not happy with the philosophy of the coach and the general direction in which the team was headed. He played in only 2 of the last
8 games before leaving the club for good.
When Diaw left via a buyout, he was in the final year of his $9 million contract. In the 20 games, he played with the Spurs; Diaw averaged 4.7 points and 4.3 boards. He performed exceptionally well during the playoffs and provided
depth on the defensive end, especially against Los Angeles Clippers.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich assigned him on Blake Griffin throughout the series and in those 4 games; he averaged season best 6.3 rebounds and 7.5 points. However coming into the Conference finals against Oklahoma City Thunder,
his performance took a nose dive.
Boris in the 9th year of his professional career is still in the pursuit of his first championship ring, and given his level of comfort and Spurs success during the last season, he was bound to re-sign with them. The
franchise also seems to have given him a preference over DeJuan Blair, who despite being a good option is a risk because of no ACL’s in his knees.
Boris is currently in France, where he is preparing with the French National Basketball team for the 2012 London Olympics. France are due to open their Olympic campaign on July 28 in a game against the USA.
