Boris Shpilevsky beats Ting Kwok to takes first stage of Tour of East Java 2011 – Cycling Update
Tabriz Petrochemical team’s Boris Shpilevsky showed his brilliant sprinting ability and won the first stage of Tour of East Java 2011 on Friday, September 23 which took place in Surabaya.
The 29-year-old Russian professional road bicycle racer set the fastest time of 59 minutes and 55 seconds to cover the distance of 48 kilometres.
Ho Ting Kwok of the Hong Kong team was in runner-up spot with the same timing as the Russian and Anuar Manan (Terengganu Cycling Team) finished third ahead of Carlo Barendillo (Plan B Racing Team).
All the cyclists worked hard to cover the 30 laps as each laps was 1.6 kilometres and also pass through the four intermediate sprints. However, in the final kilometres, the five cyclists made their breakaway lead and built a huge gap.
The group consisted of Boris Shpilevsky, Ho Ting Kwok (Hong Kong), Anuar Manan, Carlo Barendillo and Muhd Zulhilmie Ahmad Zamri (Malaysia). They worked well until the final lap while Ahmad Zamri and Barendillo launched an attack to take a lead but failed
as the trio managed to get away.
Anuar Manan and Ting Kwok worked hard to catch the Russian but Boris increased his pace and crossed the finish line ahead of the other cyclists without any difficulty.
Previously, Boris took four stages of the Tour of Hainan in 2009. He took overall first spot in Tour of Hainan and grabbed the second stage of Tour of Belgium in 2008.
48 cyclists crossed the finish line with the same timing as the Russian while Kaswanto (Seven Stones) was in 49th place with a difference of 10 seconds.
Boris put in a brilliant performance as he fought hard throughout the race. He managed to get an impressive victory in the first stage of the tour.
The next stage will start in Surabaya and finish in Gresik as all the cyclists will cover the distance of 164.3 kilometres. It will be interesting to see how Boris will carry his winning momentum into the next stage of the exciting tour.
