Boris Shpilevsky retains victory and takes leader’s jersey in Tour of East Java 2011
Tabriz Petrochemical team’s Boris Shpilvesky put in a tremendous performance in the second stage of Tour of East Java 2011 on Saturday, September 24. The race started in Surabaya and ended in Gresik.
In the final kilometres, Tabriz team controlled the situation and with the help of his team, the 29-year-old Russian professional road bicycle racer powered to cover the distance of 164.3 kilometres in 4 hours, 6 minutes and 56 seconds.
Manager of Tabriz, Kazem Khatounabadi told the media, "We benefited from a slightly uphill finish position. We can work hard to bring Boris (Shpilevsky) sprint race."
The course of the stage was very difficult for the cyclists because of terrible road and windy conditions. With few kilometres to go, the group of five cyclists managed to build a huge gap over the peloton. The group consisted of Wei Cheng Lee (Action Cycling
Team), Matnur (Polygon Sweet Nice Surabaya), Chun Kai Feng (Action Cycling Team), Ho Ting Kwok (Hong Kong) and Shpilevsky.
They worked hard together until the finish while Matnur and Chun Kai Feng launched an attack to take a lead but was unable to hold his pace. The trio managed to get away but Cheng Lee was caught by the peloton and Ho Ting Kwok increased his pace to catch
Shpilevsky.
Nonetheless, the Russian worked hard in the final 200 metres, as he jumped from the large group to take the last sprint and cross the finish line ahead of the other cyclists.
Ho Ting Kwok of Hong Kong was in good form and tried to take a lead but failed and secured runner-up spot with same timing as the Russian. Wei Cheng Lee finished third ahead of Matnur.
Previously, Boris took the four stages of Tour of Hainan and in 2010 he secured the second stage of the Tour of Belgium. He turned professional in 2007 with Preti Mangimi and won two stages as well as overall standing of Fleche du Sud.
Kam Po Wong (Hong Kong) tried to take part of the leading cyclists but failed to hold his pace and took 28th place with a difference of 4 seconds ahead of Barendillo Carlo (Plan B Racing Team).
Boris was very happy after taking the yellow jersey and said, "Racing is pretty hard because a lot of bad roads and the wind is quite strong. This race is really heavy and hard.”
Six cyclists including, Yusrizal Usoff (Terengganu Cycling Team), Adi Putera Yusoff (OCBC Singapore) and Darren Low (OCBC Singapore) did not finish the stage.
Boris took the overall standing with a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes and 43 seconds while Ting Kowk was runner-up at 7 seconds down from the Russian. Wei Cheng Lee finished third with a difference of 9 seconds ahead of Boonratanathanakorn.
