Borja Golan breezes past Joe Lee in 1st round – London Open 2011
Third seeded Espanola Borja Golan rushed past unseeded Englishman Joe Lee in the first round of the Coronation London Open 2011.
The third seeded Spaniard blue rained on the unseeded Englishman during the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 which is in its fourth year. The two had gotten into a skirmish at the Cumberland Lawn Tennis Club in London, Great Britain and after a few minutes the third seeped Espanola got rid of the Englishman in straight three sets of 11-9, 11-6, and 11-6.
The current world number 25, Golan was first to serve for the opening round and he was able to hold his service game to rotate the scoreboard at 1-0. He then further extended his lead to 3-0 as he squandered another two points. The unseeded Englishman was unable to set his rhythm in the beginning but eventually picked up and quickly tied the score.
From there onwards, both the players matched an eye for an eye and neither player wanted the other to take the lead. However, towards the end of the opening round the third seeded Espanola took a notch higher in his performance and ultimately clinched the set with an 11-9 score.
Amidst the second set, the third seeded Spaniard maintained his performance but the Englishman was unable to hold his service game. Lee then committed a series of unforced errors due to which he lost most of his points. However, in the end Lee was only left with six points while, the third seeded had clogged the second set.
The third seeded Espanola was now only a set away from securing a berth in the quarterfinal of the event. The two had started of the third set with much determination; however, the Englishman was unable to muster the numbers and he eventually ended up losing the match.
On the contrary, the third seeded Espanola was on fire as he smashed a few rail shots with a combination of variation shots. Golan did not have to play more advanced shots as his opponent was an easy battle.
Golan finally closed the set and sealed his victory of the match. He will now be facing Egyptian Andrew Wagih Shoukry in the following round of the tournament.
