Born To Sea set to test his skills in Irish Derby
The John M. Oxx-trained bay colt, Born To Sea, is all set to test his racing credentials in the coming Saturday’s high-stakes event of Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby that will go down at the Curragh Race Course.
The Group 1 contest of colts and fillies has received 88 entries so far, including some big names of the horseracing world.
Fresh from the glamorous Royal Ascot event, the son of Invincible Spirit, out of mare Urban Sea, Born To Sea is going to run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs for the very first time in his career.
According to John M. Oxx, the track distance is a big challenge for the colt, but he hopes that the runner will be able to cope with it convincingly.
While speaking to the local media today, the trainer said, “We'll make a decision later, but it's very likely he'll take his chance. He's come out of Ascot very well and it's a big step up in distance, but we think it's worth trying."
Besides, Born To Sea, John M. Oxx has another entry in the Irish Derby, in the shape of, Akeed Mofeed, who has been out of action since September, 2011.
“Akeed Mofeed hasn't run this season and has had a few setbacks, but I'm happy with him now,” stated the trainer.
However, all eyes are going to be hinged on, Born To Sea, who is a half brother of Sea The Star - the unbeaten champion of the three ace events of 2009 including the 2, 000 Guineas, Arc and Derby.
Born To Sea started his career with a grand victory on September 10, 2011, where he was sent as the 5 to 2 favourite for his very first race that took place at the Curragh.
The colt went on to finish as a runner-up in the following race on October, 30. After finishing 12th in the Guineas Stakes, and winding up 5th in Irish 2,000 Guineas during May 2012, the colt delivered an outstanding performance against 15 strong rivals in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot on June 19.
Now, the energetic runner is quite ready to show his guts in the Irish Derby that will definitely be an acid test of his personas.
