Born To Sea to take down Camelot in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for striking the first graded win
Holding one of the most promising entries in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Entire Colts & Fillies) is the three-year-old Irish bay colt, Born To Sea. Turning up for surging the level of competition is a line-up of seven three-year-old runners. The mile and four furlong race has brought together some tremendous talent with the limelight being on the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby victor, Camelot.
Born To Sea, half brother to the racing legend Sea The Stars, who won the 2000 Guineas, Derby and Arc in 2009, is eying the spectacle at Curragh on Saturday, 30th June. Invincible Spirit’s colt aimed at putting his head at the front on three occasions during the 2012 campaign.
He missed the 2000 Guineas to the twelfth position in the field of eighteen on 5th May, 2012 at Newmarket over a mile. The three-year-old will race against the 2012 Triple Crown sensation, Camelot.
He then stationed fifth in the Group 1 Abu Dhabi Irish 2000 Guineas on 26th May, 2012 at Curragh over a mile. Power landed the race with a length’s lead while riding with jockey, Joseph O’Brien.
The Urban Sea foaled finished a solid fourth in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes on 19th June, 2012 at the Ascot over a mile. He failed to disturb the pace of the winner, Most Improved.
All the three outings of the season were over a mile with good or good to soft ground conditions. He will hoof over a mile and four furlong soft ground today. The drastic step-up in distance was encouraged by the trainer who commented:
Oxx added: "He's come out of Ascot very well and it's a big step up in distance, but we think it’s worth trying."
The 20 to 1 odds contender will be accompanied by Johnny Murtagh and the dual will commence from the second stall, Imperial Monarch on one side and the Aidan O’Brien trained, Camelot, on the other.
The Christopher Tsui owned has far less to lose than the 1 to 3 favourite of the race, Camelot, who does not only have an unbeaten record at stake but might make his explosive chances for the St Leger in September doubtful too.
