  1. It can cost you a lot of money because you are not covered by medicare. In Australia permanent Australians and citizens are entitled to free medical care.

  2. Hi.  I appreciate your situation.  Your husband needs to pay for an interpreter for you, so that you can find out all this information, and to help you deal with doctors and nurses.  Here is a link to an interpreting service:

There is also an interpreter service at the Royal Women's Hospital in Carlton, where many Melbourne women give birth: http://www.thewomens.org.au/InterpreterS...

You may not have planned to have your baby in Victoria, but it is obvious that the birth will happen here, so you need to learn about the Victorian health system:  http://www.health.vic.gov.au/maternity/y...

You need to know much more than just how much the birth will cost, as you will have to make many choices about your care and the baby's care, including whether to breast feed, and what to do if there are complications in the pregnancy or the birth.

I strongly advise you to attend childbirth education classes before the birth, and to make a birth plan about how you want to give birth.  http://www.thewomens.org.au/ChildbirthEd...

As a teacher of English as a second language, I also believe that English classes would greatly assist you.  For a small fee, you can attend classes at AMEP:  http://www.ames.net.au/AMEP which provides lessons at a time and place to suit you.

You are not alone: there are thousands of people in similar situations to yours.  And there is plenty of help for you if you need it.

    Welcome to Melbourne!
