Question:

Born in Germany?

I was born in Germany in the early 1960's, to British parents, in an RAF hospital. Before my parents could bring me back to the UK they had to get 'naturalisation' papers drawn up from the British Consulate in Dusseldorf. When I applied for a passport I had to supply the passport office with a copy of the naturalisation certificate.

What I don't understand is why, when born to British parents in a British hospital did I have to have to be 'naturalised'?

Anyone know?

  1. British nationality law is perhaps the most complex of any in the world.  If you had been born in or after 1983, you would have merely had to register your birth under the law of lex sanguinis.  However, at the time of your birth, you fell under the requirement to be "naturalized" on paper.

  2. Sorry I don't know.
