Born in Scotland, raised in US as temporary resident. How do I obtain a British passport?

Mother is an American citizen, Dad is citizen of the UK. I want to sail to Mexico this winter but need some sort of documentation. How do I go about this?

What's a temporary resident?  Surely you could get dual nationality if your dad is from the UK?

You are also an American citizen, provided your mother meets certain criteria or if you were born in the US.  If this is the case, then why not get a US passport?
