Born in the U.S. How can I get my native papers?

Several years ago there were allowing legal Mexican American citizens (minors) to get Dual Citizenship. SOS for me. Turned 18 and they did not offer this in the city anymore.

So do I need to go to Mexico and live there for 5 years to get dual citizenship? or is there a faster way? How can I work? Do I need papers to get a job that offers medical insurance?

Note: Have relatives living in Monterrey & Morelia.

  1. According to the Mexican Constitution the children of Mexicans born in foreign soil, are consider Mexican by birth.

So if your mother or father or both of them, are Mexican Citizens by birth, and you were born in USA; you have the right according to the Mexican Constitution to also be consider as a Mexican, and you have the right according to a Law from 1998 to a Dual citizenship.

The best thing you can do is to contact your nearest "Mexican Consulate"; and ask them about the exact process and cost.

And you can check "Instituto Nacional de Migracion" FAQ:

    http://www.inm.gob.mx/index.php?gadget=F...

And this is the site for the "Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores"

Process and requierements to declare mexican nationality by birth:

    http://www.sre.gob.mx/tramites/nacionali...

    http://www.sre.gob.mx/english/services/n...

This document is issued to Mexican citizens who were born in Mexico, or abroad and whose father or mother or both are Mexican, who when older than 18 years of age acquired or made use of another nationality prior to March 20, 1998 and who would like to exercise their right to retain their Mexican nationality.

You can also contact a Mexican Immigration Lawyer if any of the process turns too complicated.

Also check before hand what are the obligations you will acquire before the Mexican Government, if you decide to apply for the Dual C. like carrying a Mexican Passport when you cross to Mexico, or you can be subject to penalties.

    TO WORK:

To get IMSS (public medical insurance for workers) you will need a CURP (unique code of population registry), and for that you will need a "credencial de elector" your voting card; and for that you will need your birth certificate or a passport, and a proof of address like an electrical bill.

So yes for a formal job you will need identifications that are only given to mexicans, so you need to get everything in order.

    I hope this helps.
