Borussia Dortmund players delighted with win over Mainz
Borussia Dortmund players Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender are delighted after picking up a crucial 2-0 away victory over Mainz on Sunday, 31 October, bringing them to the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Attacking midfielder Mario Götze put in an excellent performance as he inspired his side to an important win. He netted the first goal, an inspired solo effort, after 27 minutes.
Götze, 18, also set up the clincher in the 67th minute when he sent Lucas Barrios through on goal. Striker Barrios, 25, then rounded Mainz keeper Christian Wetklo and slotted the ball into the net.
The three points lifted Borussia to top spot, one point ahead of their weekend opponents, and Sahin could barely contain his delight.
"We put in a great performance. Hats off to the team that bounced back from the bitter exit from the cup (against minnows Kickers Offenbach) in such an impressive manner.
'We played brilliantly'
"It's great to see that we were able to create six or seven big chances in an away game against the league leaders. Everything worked out. We played brilliantly. Hopefully we can continue like this."
Sahin’s fellow midfielder Bender added that he felt Borussia were more than deserving of the victory and hoped they could maintain their good form for their next two matches — trips to face Paris Saint Germain in the UEFA Europa League and Hannover in the Bundesliga.
He said that: "Due to the chances, we definitively deserved to win this game. We have to approach the next two away games like (this). We just have to press forward, play aggressively and stick to our game plan. And then we will look as good in Paris and Hannover.
When you climb back to top spot you have every reason to be pleased."
